The Auckland Stadiums team is beating the 'war on waste' as a recent report shows.
In 2014, Cleaning Manager Susan Wikaira started working with waste removal contractor Clean Event to identify ways to better manage waste after major events. Demonstrating the success of this relationship is a recent report which showed that after the AC/DC concert at Western Springs Stadium last year 85% of waste was diverted from landfill – up from 30%.
"I am passionate about recycling and work very closely with Clean Event. Before every event I work with them to put in place a plan for waste management and recycling. This includes the stadium it is held at as well as the streets immediately surrounding the venue," says Susan.
She is now working to establish a waste station set up at Mt Smart Stadium so the sorting can be done at the venue for all Vodafone Warriors' games and also for on-site tenants – Auckland Football Federation, Oceania, and Athletics Auckland.
Clean Event Managing Director George Seton says achieving good results comes down to good planning, including identifying the types and volumes of waste that will be produced, determining what recycling and organics receivers will take, and designing the logistics of waste at the event, such as sorting.
